  • Insulation for the Harshest Conditions - 3M Type KL insulation is designed to add optimal loft, which helps to trap air in the jacket, and keep you warm and cozy. We call this jacket the "140" because it has 140 grams of insulation keeping you warm.
  • Designed in the Cold North - Being based in Minnesota, we know cold. Lots of our climbing season is spent in the dead of winter, climbing ice pillars or frozen fingers. That's we we built a burly Belay Jacket for the harshest conditions.
  • Built-In Climbing Features - Designed with a belay snap and bottom up zipper for easy belaying. Inside pockets to keep your phone battery alive, and a helmet compatible hood.
  • Keep the Warm in, and Cold Out - All IronRange Jackets have elastic toggles on the bottom, and the hood. This helps you optimize your perfect fit.

Built with 3M™ Thinsulate™ Insulation (Type KL)

Engineered warmth without bulk. Our jacket’s insulation layer uses 3M’s high-loft Type KL synthetic insulation to deliver outstanding thermal performance in a lightweight, packable form. Because the fibers are thermally bonded into a fine matrix, Type KL traps more air and retains loft even in damp conditions — keeping you warm, dry, and agile whether you’re sending a route, belaying mid-season, or layering for alpine chill.

And because of its synthetic nature, it recovers faster when compressed (e.g., packed in a bag or clipped to a harness) and maintains performance when weather turns damp or when layering under a shell.

Every feature you want in a belay jacket

I've been on the hunt for a sport-climbing belay jacket for years. I've delayed updating my jacket from 2010 because I'm stubborn and picky, as I wanted a jacket with spacious shoe pockets, easy access places for belay glasses and grigri, helmet compatibility, and keeps me excessively warm without the need to layer.

The IronRange checks those boxes and MORE. The synthetic insulation keeps it simple, lean, and I'm not worried about wind, or a single branch-snag setting an entire chicken's worth of feathers free. If you do a few crag laps, all that heat stays within the jacket. The extra length on the sleeves also helps keep my hands so, so toasty. Honestly, it can be too warm at times, and that's just fine. In my mind that's what I want. I never considered the 80 over the parka.

The warmth is so cozy that I've started losing access to the jacket because my wife steals it...

I do want to point out that the shoe pockets are incredible and sufficiently out of the way. They aren't getting crammed in and they aren't in the way of belaying. In the photo, I've got Solutions squirreled away.

I went with the teal/pink combo, as I normally look like a tree and wanted to branch out a little. It was my favorite of the options, and I'm too pale for the orange. Would I have chosen a black or darker tone? Sure, but that's not Escape's direction and that's awesome.

A Few Months and One Nation Wide Blizzard Later, Review!

I got this jacket a few months ago (right before the mega blizzard in the US hehe). So I had a perfect time to test it. It's RIDICULOUSLY light and comfortable. Not overlay hot, since it ventilates very well.

I only have two points of critique.

#1 - A detailed rating about what temps the jacket is good for would be nice. It's great by itself for anything above freezing, but I did find that anything lower than 30°-40° f, you had to start thinking about layering the jacket. Pair it with a soft shell and a base layer and you're golden 6° weather in my testing. I expect to have to layer jackets. I'd just like to know roughly when I'd need to.

Basically more technical details about the insulation would be nice.

#2 - If they were to make a version two, I'd love to see a glove ring added to the outside. The two massive pockets on the inside are big enough to story gloves, but I'd (personally) like to have quick external access to them.

Overall, those points aren't enough to make me knock it down to a four star review. The quality you get from escape products is just so good!

Love it

Love it. Very comfortable and warm. Haven't had a chance to wear it below zero yet but I am confident it'll be warm. I'm an ice climber and am excited to pack this thing into the mountains.
I'm 6' 180 w/slightly long arms and I got the Medium, as recommended. Fits perfectly as far as enough room for climbing layers underneath but not being a freestyle trash bag.

Love this thing

I have been absolutely loving this coat for the somewhat mild Colorado winter this year. I've been rock climbing outside through the winter and the inside pockets are perfect to keep my rock shoes warm while belaying. Also, the button below the bottom zipper is great for when using a belay device as it keeps the bottom of the coat more closed up and warm. Also the teal and pink color scheme is the absolute best - I get so many comments from other climbers. Thanks Escape for all of your intentional choices with this coat!

Lightweight and Warm - My new go-to winter coat

I have been really pleased with this coat. We have had severely cold temps this winter. This coat has kept me warm getting the car dug out on -10 F mornings. It has stood up well to chores and looks great in bright yellow. The only thing I wish was better is the zippers on the pockets. They are not sewn in as solidly as I would expect. The zip on one side can get stuck when fully open. Still a great coat overall. I'm looking forward to getting it out on the crag when it warms up just a bit. ;)

Performs as advertised. Love it!!!

Loving this jacket so far. Its super comfortable and the inside pockets do work when it comes to warming your shoes. Nobody enjoys shoving their feet in cold climbing shoes. This thing is like wearing a cold weather sleeping bag while your waiting for your turn. The hood fit perfectly over my Petzl helmet as well. didnt even need to adjust. We were in sub forty degree temps and I had no issue staying warm. Great job!!!

Solid jacket cool features

Great jacket. A little longer that my previous puffy which is of course ideal for cold windy days. I feel like I'm in between medium and large in a lot of cases. I bought a medium and it feels big enough to move around in with a couple layers underneath. Love keeping my climbing shoes warm inside my jacket with huge pockets, puffy only had one small inside pocket. And cool feature with the snap to keep the bottom of the jacket closed but haven't tested it yet cause it's been miserably cold in the northeast and I've been bouldering mostly

Best Warmth/$ Value Out There

This is a great jacket. I have a Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Parka that I love, and this jacket comes very close to that in terms of quality and warmth, and even has some better features compared to that jacket (belay button, anyone?).

I used it in very cold weather for shoveling, belaying, and standing still in very cold weather, and it performed excellently.

For the price, there is absolutely not a better cold weather tech parka / belay jacket out there. I will be using this in my winter rotation very frequently, and it will probably displace my Patagonia parka most days (which is really saying something!). I do like the fun yellow color, though I wish there were more color options - as I typically prefer natural colors.

The only real negative thing to say about this jacket is that the fleece lining in the pockets is a sort of fleece material that irritates my skin when it is dry/cold/cracked - which is frequent in CO winters. The pockets are double-insulated, which is great, but I wish they were either not fleece-lined or used a less irritating fleece material.

Now I just need to get the other version of this jacket for when it's not 0˚F outside!

Great Jacket!

Great Jacket, super warm and comfortable! The fit is great I can stay mobile and not feel constricted without it feeling loose or baggy. I also really like the way it looks, its very clean and simple design. My only complaint is that the zipper quality is not as good as the rest of the jacket. the front zipper can get stuck and takes some jostling sometimes and the side pocket zipper fell off after a month of use. But overall its awesome and I love wearing it!

This is a great jacket that will keep you warm

This is a great jacket that will keep you warm without a lot of weight. It also feels like it will hold up better than my other puff style jackets to everyday wear and tear due to a more durable outer layer. Does everything I need it to do without any extra fluff. The fit is also spot on and it looks great.

Great light weight compact coat

Light weight and compact. Does not overheat but keeps me warm in 0 degrees windy weather.
I do not use the hood - wind gets inside
Deep outside pockets that zip. Deep inside pockets. Wish I could get to these without having to unzip the jacket.
Jacket rolls up into a small bundle then instantly puffs out when I remove from my bag.

The Best Belay Parka

Escape Climbing hit it out of the park again with a lightweight and trendy belay parka. Similar fit to Outdoor Research in the large. I am 5'10, 155 lbs. and the large is a perfect oversized fit. Love the high quality goggle pockets and zippers. Excellent weight to warmth ratio, packable, and great customer service make purcahsing this parka from Escape an easy call.

weather stopping power.

I've now been caught out in 18 degrees for multiple hours as well as long cold days. This parka has absolutely stood up to it without any issue. It's comfortable, warm and it doesn't limit mobility. This is a win for someone like me who is normally always cold, can't suggest this coat enough.
